What is a Digital Sales Consultant? The definition according to Greg Trinidad
The term is used for online salespeople, CRM specialists, lead generation and digital marketing. We mean something fundamentally different by it: not a salesperson who uses digital tools, but a professional who investigates how commercial decisions come about.

What is a Digital Sales Consultant?
A Digital Sales Consultant is a commercial specialist who, following Greg Trinidad's Diagnostic Selling method, investigates why customers do or do not reach a decision, and helps organisations shape their commercial processes accordingly.
The Digital Sales Consultant combines insight into human decision-making with commercial strategy, technology and process improvement to develop a measurable, repeatable and future-proof sales organisation.
First establish. Then understand. Then treat.
In one sentence: A Digital Sales Consultant, as defined by Greg Trinidad, is a commercial adviser who uses Diagnostic Selling to investigate how customers make decisions and helps companies shape their sales organisation accordingly.
Doing sales or diagnosing sales
The key distinction lies not in the tools, but in the question you start with. A traditional sales professional asks himself how to close this deal. A Digital Sales Consultant asks why this customer does or does not reach a decision, and what the organisation should learn from that.
So the Digital Sales Consultant is not a new name for a salesperson. It is an adviser with a field of expertise of its own.
| Traditional sales professional | Digital Sales Consultant as defined by Greg Trinidad |
|---|---|
| Focuses on selling products or services | Investigates how commercial decisions come about |
| Tries to remove objections | Investigates what is holding a decision back |
| Works from sales targets | Works from diagnosis and commercial objectives |
| Uses sales methods to steer conversations | Uses Diagnostic Selling to understand decisions |
| Focuses mainly on individual deals | Also improves the structure and workings of the sales organisation |
The three conditions for a commercial decision
According to Greg Trinidad's Fire Triangle model, a Digital Sales Consultant investigates three essential conditions: the stake in changing, the trust to make a decision and the urgency to actually act.
- Stake: why him. How does this person experience it personally? Without a personal stake nothing happens, however good the solution is.
- Trust: why you. Can he carry the risk of choosing you, and of being held accountable for it later?
- Urgency: why now. What happens if things stay as they are for another year? If the answer is "nothing", he won't buy now.
If one of them is missing, the decision stalls. The Digital Sales Consultant establishes which one it is and decides the next step accordingly. How that works in a conversation is explained in Diagnostic Selling: establish first, then sell.
What a Digital Sales Consultant actually does
The work starts with the diagnosis, but it does not stop at the conversation. What the Digital Sales Consultant establishes, he carries through to the entire commercial organisation:
- Investigating decision-making behaviour. Where do customers drop out, and which of the three conditions was missing at that moment?
- Designing the process. From demand generation and qualification to connection, baseline measurement, confirmation, explicit agreement, contract, onboarding and aftersales. Each step gets a clear question: what must be established here before we move on?
- Using technology where it helps. AI, automation and an AI adviser such as Henk take over the repeatable work: informing, qualifying, following up. Human attention goes to the moment a decision is made.
- Measuring and improving. Not just how many deals were closed, but why deals do or do not go ahead. That is how the sales organisation becomes measurable and repeatable.
Why this profession is emerging now
Buyers now do most of their research themselves, and AI is taking over more and more of the preparatory sales work. What remains is the hardest part: the moment someone has to decide. That is exactly where tricks, scripts and pushing harder fall short.
Organisations therefore have less need for someone who persuades better, and more need for someone who understands why customers decide, and shapes the organisation accordingly. That is the profession of the Digital Sales Consultant.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Digital Sales Consultant a salesperson?
No. A Digital Sales Consultant does talk to customers, but his profession is investigating and improving how decisions come about. He works both on the deal and on the organisation around it.
What is the difference from a sales consultant or sales trainer?
A sales consultant or trainer usually improves how salespeople present, negotiate and close. A Digital Sales Consultant starts one step earlier: he establishes what is missing on the buyer's side and shapes the commercial process accordingly.
Which method does a Digital Sales Consultant use?
Diagnostic Selling, Greg Trinidad's method, based on the Fire Triangle model: Stake, Trust and Urgency. The model is set out in full on vuurdriehoek.nl.
